The Society for the Study of Early China is a scholarly, non-profit society that aims to foster scholarly exchange and communication among all people interested in the culture and civilization of China from earliest times down through the end of the Han dynasty in 220 CE. Its role is to further the progress of studies within this field and within Sinology in general.
Established in 1975, the goals of the SSEC are to provide for cooperative exchange and communication of knowledge and ideas and by encouraging projects critical to the growth of the field. For the Constitution and Bylaws of SSEC, please click here.
The SSEC’s journal, Early China, publishes original research on all aspects of the culture and civilization of China from earliest times through the end of the Eastern Han dynasty period (CE 220).
Anyone can be a member of the SSEC. SSEC membership grants voting rights in the Society elections. Members can be nominated to become board members, if they wish to. SSEC membership automatically includes a subscription to the journal Early China, including a digital copy of its issue starting from the year of activation of the membership.
